I thought it was finally time I got a blog considering I am almost 2 months into the course now. I will try to update it as much as possible with my current thoughts and feelings about the news and what not.
Currently dominating the news, well at least most of the papers today, is John Sergeant quitting Strictly Come Dancing. The front page of the Mirror reads "Strictly gone cruising" because Sergeant has a cruise booked, with all expenses paid, for 6 days after his final 'farewell' performance on Saturday's Strictly. Sergeant says that the timing of him quitting the show and the cruise were not connected. The fact that the Mirror tried to get a completely different angle to every other paper just so they could make it a front page is just stupid. The double page spread in the Mirror features reaction from fans and David Cameron saying how ‘devastated’ he is, it also features an article by Fiona Phillips titled “The judges have cheated viewers”.
I think this is all a bit too much, ok he was a journalist and I’m aspiring to be one, but he’s pulled out of a dancing programme. Just because he’s a fan favourite doesn't mean he deserves all this media attention. Brian made a good point in the lecture today, that South Today are covering a local angle on this (as all BBC local programmes will be) just because they can use the footage of him dancing for free. As if there wasn’t enough coverage of it on the national news we have to see more on the local news. Ok it’s a news story, but I don’t think it deserves this much exposure! Good riddance Sergeant!
