Sherlock Holmes Review

The character of Sherlock Holmes was created by Sir Arthur Conon Doyle and has starred in many novels and short stories. The character, and his trusty sidekick Dr. Watson, has also been adapted to film many times and in this 21st century effort directed by Guy Ritchie the world’s most well known detective is almost reborn in what is set to be the last blockbuster of the decade.

Holmes is played by Robert Downey, Jr. who does an excellent job of portraying a very clever but effortless detective; an accidental genius of sorts. Jude Law plays Dr. Watson and the chemistry between Downey and Law is explicitly visible in the film and works to its advantage. It seems so natural and makes the characters very genuine and also pays homage to the relationship between Holmes and Watson – a bond as close as brothers. Watching them together is like watching a comedy sketch; they do genuinely look like they have known each other for years. The rest of the cast are also very strong, Rachel McAdams plays Irene Adler, a criminal mastermind whose motives are never quite revealed. Mark Strong plays Lord Blackwood and suits his role well; he has a very cold and dark aura about him that makes him perfect for the role of the villain.

The film is set in 1891, and the case to be solved in the film is to be the last case that Holmes and Watson will solve before Watson goes to get married. The pair aim to stop Lord Blackwood destroying London with his ‘black magic’. Lord Blackwood seemingly raises from the dead after being hanged and Dr. Watson himself even pronounced Blackwood dead.

As you’d expect from a Sherlock Holmes film, the film is very clever from all different perspectives. It is also directed in a way that almost insults the viewer’s intelligence to glorify Holmes’ superior intelligence that makes him the fantastic detective that he is. Most clues surpass the viewer and are then exploited by Holmes and then the viewer realises the genius of the film.

Holmes uses violence as a method of solving cases in this film and he demonstrates that he is very good at is, this is a side of Holmes that we’ve never seen before. Add to this the Hollywood style explosions and set pieces you’ve got Sherlock Holmes for 2009. A fight scene in slow motion is another example of Holmes’ genius. Normally slow motions scenes in films are irritating, but this scene is put together so well as Holmes explains what he is doing and why he is doing it move by move to overcome a big bruiser almost twice his size.

Sherlock Holmes is a relatively simple film that doesn’t require the viewer to think too much, all the clues are explained, the viewers do not have to figure anything out for themselves. It’s as entertaining as it is action packed. It’s rich in British wit and subtle humour that fits the setting of the film. In authenticity to the original character, there is not too many similarities, but Ritchie has created his own new 21st century Sherlock Holmes. It’s safe to say that this won’t be the only time we’ll be seeing Holmes on a film screen this century: the film sets up a sequel in typically annoying fashion making the ending dire for the viewer.

The narrative as whole is strong yet predictable, even at the beginning of the film it is clear how it will end. I think there are a few scenes that could have been cut down or were just completely unnecessary. Another little problem with the film is the authenticity to the time when it is set; in some respects it is clear that research has been done well to recreate it, however I can’t help but think that Irene always looks a little too made-up. I’m sure that make up wasn’t as advanced as it is now in the late 1800’s and to be honest there’s no real need to make Rachel McAdams up, she’s sexy enough as it is and plays the role of the femme fatale well.

Although predictable at times, Sherlock Holmes is still one of the better films of 2009. It’s very entertaining and a new take on the Sherlock character. Combined with some action, some humour and case solving detective genius, it’s a must see this holiday season.

'Date with Fate' Video 2 (Described as comedy gold!)

So, for the second week of doing the 'Date with Fate' competition as a video we decided to make it completely silly and go completely over the top, maybe too far over the top...

Hadouken review published @ Winchester News Online

Hadouken proved that they are not one hit wonders as they sold out the Joiners in Southampton on Thursday the 26th November.

Soft Toy Emergency are the only support band and they did a great job of warming up the crowd for Hadouken’s return to Southampton.

The headline act greeted a rowdy crowd with the first track from their debut album, Get Smashed Gate Crash to kick off their set in pulsating style. Next the band played their new single M.A.D. from their new album 'For The Masses' which is set to be released 25th January 2010.

As the band broke into their most successful single to date, Declaration of War, a series of lasers started beaming lights all around Southampton’s most intimate venue. The lasers featured for the rest of the set with a different colours or styles for each song. The lighting show that the band put on was phenomenal creating a thriving and electric atmosphere catapulting the screaming fans into delirium.

Hadouken kept up the fast paced set with fan favourite songs like Crank It Up and Liquid Lives. As their set came to a close Hadouken stormed into Bombshell, a track from the new album that is produced by Drum & Bass act Noisia.

Considering that the average age of the audience was in the mid-teens the noise and atmosphere created shook the Joiners to its very core, their trademark song That Boy That Girl ended a very impressive night from one of England's most exciting bands.

Winchester News Online Diary (Weeks 3 & 4)

A lot has changed in the last two weeks WINOL wise for me. I have got a lot more involved in my role and undertaken in a lot more work. The first change was to change 'Lucky Dates' to 'Date with Fate', we did this for many reasons, lucky dates has more than one meaning, and date with fate is more BBC, so we thought this would be a more appropriate competition name. We also made the competition real in this week in the sense that the competition could actually be won. Chris Horrie kindly bought three bop (student night out) tickets as a prize for 'Date with Fate'. The competition was a great success and we decided to make it into a video for next week to include an interview with this week's winner. The next change was instead of just having reader response social networking websites called 'Winchester Speaks', the features team and I thought it would be better to have a general 'Winchester News Online' twitter account and facebook group. I feel this works a lot better as 'Winchester Speaks' didn't really indicate it was at all related with WINOL and using these social networking platforms we will be able to publicise WINOL content as well as get reader responses. Needless to say I used the facebook group and twitter account to promote the first live bulletin as much as I could so that we would get a lot of viewers watching it.

So, here is the first live WINOL bulletin, week 1,(or week 3 if you count the two dummy editions) - 18/11/2009

We were lucky enough to have Kay Oliver of GMTV, Sky and ITV as a guest editor for the WINOL live launch and her knowledge and expertise brought a lot to the WINOL news team and I think we all took a lot away from meeting with her. Here are her comments about WINOL and journalism at the University of Winchester:

Week 4 was a very big week for me. I had the massive job of pressing the record button on the tape deck to record the live bulletin! But in all seriousness, it was quite a big week for me as the features team and I decided to run 'Date with Fate' as a video competition, revealing the winning date and featuring an interview with last week's winner. It was my first TV (internet?) appearance so cut me some slack. I think the thing I found most hard was to smile while talking and animate my voice more so I wasn't talking in monotone. We decided to make it a bit silly because we want it to be funny, and we included some cheesy gameshow music, anyway here I am:

Also in week 4 I created a twitterfeed for the WINOL website so every story that was published to the WINOL website is then published to the WINOL twitter page and I set up different feeds for news, sport and features so each story is categorised aswell. I think this is a good way to get the content on the WINOL website read because a lot of focus is put on to the bulletin and not so much on to the stories on the website.

So, here is week 2 WINOL bulletin (or week 4 if you count the two dummy editions) - 25/11/2009, this is where I had the very important and complicated job of pressing record on the tape deck to record the bulletin otherwise there would be no bulletin.

I think this bulletin was our best yet and we are improving more and more week after week. We also had Andy Steggall of ITV and Sky, as the guest editor for this week and I think that the guest editors are fantastic for feedback from people who work on bulletins like WINOL in the real world. The expertise and responses that they give the WINOL team are invaluable and it's always a great experience and great feeling when they praise the work that you are doing.

Bring Me The Horizon review published @ Winchester News Online

Bring Me The Horizon entertained a sell out crowd at the Portsmouth Pyramid Centre on Thursday the 19 November.

Support came from two great American bands: August Burns Red and A Day To Remember. August Burns Red greeted an excitable crowd with a tight set of metalcore songs. A Day To Remember’s fans were out in force and the band did not disappoint. Despite a short set, ADTR pretty much stole the show and a lot of people left the show after ADTR’s set.

Bring Me The Horizon took to the stage with an illuminated backdrop displaying the massive letters ‘BMTH’. They kicked off their set with the popular single Chelsea Smile, which really got the crowd going. Despite the transition from deathcore to metalcore from the first album to the second album, the set still flowed incredibly well with a range of material from both albums.

BMTH lead singer, Oli Sykes, demanded extremely big mosh pits for songs such as Pray For Plagues, Medusa and Diamonds Aren’t Forever. The band have recently released 'Suicide Season: Cut Up’ which features remixes of songs from their latest studio album. They cleverly use clips from this as intros and outros to certain songs.

Bring Me The Horizon sent their fans home happy by ending the show with a party on stage for their last song Football Season Is Over with the anthemic chanting of “Party ‘til you pass out / Drink ‘til you’re dead / Dance all night ‘til you can’t feel you legs”.

Winchester News Online Diary (Weeks 1 & 2)

Winchester News Online (or WINOL) is an online newspaper and weekly bulletin produced by my university which I am a part of. My job title is "Commissioning Editor for Reader Response/UGC Editor" which basically means I am in charge of getting feedback from the viewers of the bulletin and visitors of the website.

I started this role by starting up a Facebook group and Twitter account, both titled 'Winchester Speaks' as two easy ways for the people of Winchester to contact Winchester News Online. To publicise the site I plan to run some competitions over the nest few months.

The first competition is called 'Lucky Dates'. For this competition I developed lucky dates 'tickets' which said: "It could be your lucky day with lucky dates. All you have to do is check here: www.wincesterjournalism.co.uk. Your lucky date is..." and then put a certain year on each ticket. The corresponding piece on the website (which hasn't been uploaded yet, otherwise I would just post a link to it) says: "Is it your lucky day? Check if your lucky date is a winner here! This week’s lucky date is based on the now cult series of films: Star Wars. But when was the first ever Star Wars film originally released?" I then included a picture of the Star Wars logo, which is free from copyright because the 'image, or text depicted in it, only consists of simple geometric shapes and text. They do not meet the threshold of originality needed for copyright protection, and are therefore public domain'. I then reveal the answer: "The first film: ‘Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope’ originally just titled ‘Star Wars’ was first released in 1977. If your ticket has the year 1977 on it then you are a winner! Email winchesterspeaks@hotmail.com for details of your prize." However this competition cannot be won as I never printed a ticket with the winning date on it, cunning, eh?

The second competition that I am running is a basic 'how many sweets in the jar' competition (pictured right). However, this competition can actually be won and the prize is the jar with the sweets in which I paid for out of my own pocket, all for for the promotion of Winchester News Online! I also sat and counted the sweets out which took an awful long time! The corresponding piece for the competition of the website reads: "How many sweets in the jar? Guess correctly or guess the closest to the actual amount and this large jar of sweets could be yours just in time for Christmas. Email your guesses to winolonline@googlemail.com. Competition closes Friday 18th December 2009, winner will be announced later that day and informed by email. If there is more than once correct guess, the winner will be picked out of a hat." I then provided a little background as to why I am running these competitions: "The competitions that we run here on Winchester News Online are our way of promoting our website in the hope of creating a bigger awareness of it and making it the most popular source of news for Winchester and the surrounding community." When this competition is posted on the website I will post a link to it on here so you can all be in with a chance of winning the jar of sweets!

As for the weekly bulletin's that Winchester News Online puts out, I don't really have much to do with them because I am part of the features department. However I help out where I can and pay a lot of attention to the process of making the bulletin as I know I will have a more news based job next term. I would have liked more of a pro-active role because I tend to feel a bit redundant when it comes to bulletin day. However it is amazing just watching all the elements of the bulletin come together.

We did our first dummy bulletin on Wednesday 4th October and it was a complete shambles to be honest. Two of the packages that were in the running order were not finished in time and therefore could not go in the bulletin so the bulletin was significantly under time. Everything was just a bit too last minute, I don't think anyone knew what to expect or how much work the bulletin would entail. We also did not include headlines in this bulletin. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) this bulletin was not recorded, however I think we still all learnt a lot from the many flaws in the bulletin and it did show a lot of potential. The presenting was very good despite the presenters having no practice run-throughs and of the packages that did make it into the bulletin, some of the camera work was very good.

As for this past week's bulletin it was a lot better, the entire team was a lot more prepared and set earlier deadlines for all packages so extra time was available for technical difficulties etc. The only problems we had this week were a few timing issues where certain packages were not the length they said they would be or were labeled wrong, this meant that we have two black holes in the bulletin. We were also lucky enough to have Ian Anderson, the former deputy head of BBC News and editor of the BBC 10'O Clock news, as a guest editor for our bulletin. This a great help for us, with an industry professional giving us feedback on out second ever news bulletin.

Here is this past week's bulletin (11/11/2009). As noted by Chris Horrie this bulletin uses the old title sequence (we are hoping to get even newer titles for this coming week's bulletin) and the first few minutes of the bulletin were lost because the tape was corrupted. Nonetheless here it is:

Next week we go live at five for real. Dummy bulletins are over. There is no room for error now. I will post a link to the bulletin on Wednesday so you can all watch it, we're trying to get as big of an audience as possible for the first bulletin so the pressure is really on!

Conspiracy Theories

I have always been fascinated by conspiracy theories. The more believable and unexplainable the better. However, I've never really been naive enough to actually believe any of them, or have I? But is it a question of naivety? A conspiracy theory would have you questioning yourself on why you don't believe it. Is it just ill-educated people that believe these conspiracy theories, or extremely well educated people that have outsmarted world leaders and exploited the dominant ideology that they present.

One conspiracy theory that I used to be fascinated by is the 'Paul Is Dead' conspiracy theory, a theory that believes Paul McCartney of the Beatles died in a car accident in 1966 and was replaced by an imposter. The evidence for this theory is a selection of clues in albums released by the Beatles. The story of Paul's alledged death is said to have been revealed through certain Beatles' songs:
  • "He didn't notice that the lights had changed" ('A Day in the Life')
  • He then crashed (a car crash sound is heard in 'Revolution 9' and 'A Day in the Life').
  • He was pronounced dead on a "Wednesday morning at 5 o'clock as the day begins" ('She's Leaving Home')
  • Nobody found this out because the news was withheld: "Wednesday morning papers didn't come" ('Lady Madonna').
An example of a visual clue - on the cover of the "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album if you hold a mirror horizontally through the middle of "Lonely Hearts" message on the drum on the album cover it reads: "I ONE IX HE <> DIE" - the "I One" is said to mean 11, and so the mesage reads "11 9 HE DIE" or the 9th of November, the date of the accident. The <> is a diamond shape that points straight up at Paul McCartney, demonstrating he had died.

There are a lot more clues to back-up this theory and you can see the full list of clues on this page on the BBC's website.

One of the most popular and most publicised conspiracy theories is the theory that the 9/11 terrorist attack in America was not actually a terrorist attack, but instead an orchestrated attack on it's own people by the US government. At first this seems highly unlikely, why would the US government do this? But with all the evidence that proves it wasn't a terrorist attack, the conspiracy theorists do have a good case.

This clip from 'Zeitgeist, The Movie' shows the 9/11 myth that is commonly believed and deconstructs it to show that there is proof that the attacks were orchestrated or allowed to happen by the US government to create fear and justify the 'War on Terror'. It is a very interesting video and does bring up a lot of interesting evidence to prove that the World Trade Centre buildings were brought down by controlled explosions and that there is no real evidence that proves that Osama Bin Ladan is responsible for the attack.

This clip from 'Zeitgeist, The Movie' proves that it was impossible that a plane could have crashed in to the Pentagon judging by the wreckage. The fact that the CCTV that would have shown what actually happened was confiscated by the FBI is all the proof I need. If a plane crashed in to the Pentagon and the CCTV showed that then why would this footage be confiscated, this seems very suspect to me. So maybe I do believe this? But what can I do about it? Nothing, is the answer.

The full film, 'Zeitgeist, The Movie' can be seen here.

There is a conspiracy theory for pretty much anything, and there is no way we will ever find out if the 9/11 conspiracy theory, or any other conspiracy theory, is true because that's why they are conspiracy theories. Most people just sit back and take what they are spoon-fed by the mass media. If more people thought for themselves and drew their own conclusions from the other sides of the stories, not only the story shown by the media, which is presented as the 'truth'. If this were to happen then maybe people in charge (the world leaders, or whoever they may be, did someone say lizards?) might think again before trying to fool nations upon nations of people.

No Modern Warfare 2 DLC in development until after the game’s release - Published @ Video Game Reviews

As I reported here, a special Modern Warfare 2 brand of Monster Energy drink revealed that DLC for Modern Warfare 2 was planned to be released in spring 2010. However Infinity Ward responded to this by saying that no Modern Warfare 2 DLC is in development and will not be until after the game’s release.

You can read my article about it here.

Batman: Arkham Asylum Review

In recent years Batman has taken the movie world by storm with the great success of 'Batman Begins' and most recently 'The Dark Knight'; but Batman has never really had a good game interpretation. However, Batman: Arkham Asylum is just that; the best Batman game to date and it actually makes you feel like Batman.

The whole game takes place on Arkham Island, home of the Arkham Asylum where all Gotham city's criminals/insane characters/Batman's foes are kept. The game starts as Batman catches the Joker ready to imprison him in Arkham Asylum once and for all. But nothing is ever that easy for Batman, the Joker escapes and creates hell for Batman as you play out the longest night in Batman's life.

The gameplay is simply phenomenal. Detective mode is genius and the game has a great variety of combat where you can take out your enemies one by one in stealth mode or take them all on at once with a simple but effective 3 button fighting system. Quite simply, you will love playing this game. I don't want to give too much away but Batman's altercations with Scarecrow, where Batman is faced with his deepest darkest fears, are presented incredibly well.

What's also unique about Batman: Arkham Asylum in the Batman sense is that it is not at all based on any recent Batman movie and focuses on just the Batman character. Batman has a very interesting history which is represented well, for example winessing the murder of both his parents at a young age, a memory that is exploited in the game. All of Batman's gadgets are used in the game and you unlock and upgrade them as the game goes on, for example the Batarang can be upgraded to a triple Batarang to take out three enemies at once.

Furthermore any Batman fanatic will love this game; it is so well researched featuring all of the characters from Batman's illustrious comic book career. Character's biographies are unlocked throughout the game along with tapes of interviews with patients at the asylum creating a tremendous back-story.

Batman: Arkham Asylum was developed by London-based Rocksteady Studios, a relatively unknown developer that has only ever produced one game before this; Urban Chaos for PS2 (anyone remember that? No, didn’t think so...) Yet this game is still up there with the best action/adventure games available.

Batman: Arkham Asylum is almost the perfect game, the only thing that lets it down is that at times it can be repetitive and the boss battles could have been improved. However, these are small flaws in this very fresh game. The game also has great replayability with 240 riddles to be a solved all over Arkham Island and the very challenging, and aptly titled, challenge mode. More challenge rooms are unlocked as you solve more riddles. Even more challenge rooms are set to be released at downloadable content with two free sets of DLC already available.

Overall Batman: Arkham Asylum is one of the best games out this year so far and if you haven’t played it yet, what are you waiting for?

PES to “aggressively” incoporate Natal/Motion Wand - Published @ Video Game Reviews

Konami have announced that they are looking into “very aggressively” incorporating the use of Xbox 360’s Project Natal and Playstation 3’s Motion Wand in future Pro Evolution Soccer releases. Whatever “very aggressively” means, maybe it’s what PES needs to win its yearly battle with FIFA.

Left 4 Dead Crash Course incorrectly priced - Published @ Video Game Reviews

The new downloadable content for Left 4 Dead, Crash Course, has been released today on the Xbox Live Marketplace but has been incorrectly priced. Crash Course is available for 800 Microsoft Points when it should be 560 Microsoft Points. The price should be rectified at some point in the next hour or two.

Major Nelson and other Xbox personalities have been warning their followers on Twitter not to buy Crash Course at 800 Microsoft Points and wait until it is priced correctly.

As with almost all items on the Xbox Live Marketplace there are no refunds for this downloadable content so if you have paid 800 Microsoft Points for it then there you are probably not going to be able to claim the 240 Microsoft Points back. As seen in this previous article on VGR (aptly titled ‘Microsoft wants your money’) Valve didn’t even want to charge for the DLC but it was Microsoft’s decision that they had to.

No Modern Warfare 2 demo before launch - Published @ Video Game Reviews

There will be no Modern Warfare 2 demo before its release on 10th November, Infinity Ward has said. As more and more developers are doing these days, Infinity Ward made this announcement via their Twitter page. Infinity Ward tweeted: “No plan for a Demo before launch. The entire team is focused on polish all the way up to ship of the full game.” However this doesn’t rule out a post-launch Demo as we have seen with Call of Duty: World at War. This news comes after last month’s news that there are no plans for a public multiplayer beta either. But why does this matter, you’re all going to buy the game on launch day anyway, aren’t you?

Modern Warfare 2 is released 10th November and is available to pre-order now on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Windows.

New features for WWE Smackdown Vs Raw 2010 - Published @ Video Game Reviews

The Smackdown Vs Raw series of games has been running for quite some time now and in recent years has not included many new features with each release. However Smackdown Vs Raw 2010 is set to change all that. With the tag-line ‘it’s your world now’ you will now be able create and customize almost everything within the game.

The most exciting new feature is that you can now create your own storylines with an extremely high level of customisation. For example you can create cut-scenes with different superstars, animations, locations, camera angles, emotions and write your own scripts. You can create the match card for every show with the matches, match stipulations and interference etc. To me this sounds like a largely improved version of the GM mode that we saw in previous editions of Smackdown Vs Raw.

The create-a-superstar feature has been completely re-designed (includes a paint feature!) and now for the first time in franchise history you can edit and create new attire for WWE superstars. Any creation, like created storylines, superstars, entrances, finishing moves and highlight reels can all be uploaded over Xbox Live or PSN and then downloaded by anyone. ‘Road to WrestleMania’, the popular story mode that was introduced last year also returns with all new storylines, the first ever diva’s storyline and a create-a-superstar storyline. Gameplay will be improved with a smaller HUD, a new reversal system based around timing and the pinfall kickout mechanism used in WWE Legends Of WrestleMania.

The Nintendo DS version of the game has had a massive overhaul with new gameplay controls (with no use of the stylus anymore) and a completely new story mode. There will also be a collectible card system where collectible cards can be earned by winning matches etc. These cards offer in game power-ups, arenas, superstar profiles amongst other things, they can then be traded with other players wirelessly. Also added to the DS version are backstage brawls and ambulances matches.

WWE Smackdown Vs Raw is released 23th October and is available to pre-order now on Playstation 2, Playstation 3, Playstation Portable, Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS.

Thoughts on the leak of Brand New's new album, 'Daisy'

So Brand New's new album 'Daisy' leaked onto the internet this past Saturday night (August 29th), almost a month before it's actual release (September 22nd).

It has been well documented how Brand New feel about leaks as in January 2006 nine untitled demos leaked onto the internet before any announcement of a new album or anything. They had been away for two years then out of nowhere these demos found their way on to the internet. Everyone was eager to hear what they had been up to and so these demos proved to be very popular. Jesse Lacey (lead singer of Brand New) is quoted as saying "No one likes to show their creation in mid-process, and those songs weren't done. They were like blueprints. Just the plan, right? It put me in a state where I was under the impression that those songs had been wasted or something—that we had to go and write new things because those had been heard. Now, in retrospect, I want those songs to be on the album and many of them aren't, and I'm probably more to blame for that than anyone. This record already feels incomplete to me without those tracks and probably will forever." That quote is from this interview – an interesting read for any Brand New fan. The album ‘The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me’ was then finally released on November 21, 2006, featuring only two of the leaked demos.

With the 'Daisy' leak at least this time the finished product has leaked, not demos. Therefore this album will not be affected the same way the previous album was as it is already finished. I saw Brand New this past Sunday at the Reading festival and mid set Jesse Lacey said "We're going to play some songs off the new record now, which you've probably heard on the internet as of last night." He did not seem happy about the leak at all and was pretty negative for the whole set and I’d assume this is why.

Brand New are my favourite band, as with a lot of people, I find that Brand New are not a band that you can just casually like, you either really really like them or you don’t like them at all. A lot of people have been waiting for this album for so long and when I heard that it had been leaked I just had to download it because I wanted to hear it so much; I'd assume a lot of other people did the same. I felt bad that I was downloading it but when everyone else is downloading it, I’d thought just be missing out if I had waited for the album to be officially released and then bought it. Nevertheless I will still buy the album when it is released just because Brand New are my favourite band and I already love the album. It would be very naïve to think that others will do the same, but because of the type of band Brand New are I think a lot of people will still buy the album. The leak may also attract new fans who may buy what they hear if they like it.

At the end of the day ‘Daisy’ has leaked and there’s nothing Brand New or anyone can do about it. Also it really is a truly incredible album. There was always going to be people that would just download the album anyway and people will still buy the album, the leak just means that they’ve been able to listen to the album a little bit before they were meant to.

Review of 'Daisy' will be up soon!

If you wanna make the world a better place, take a look at yourself, then tweet a change!

It's been a while since my last blog, and lots of things have happened. Most notably the death of Michael Jackson, his death shocked the world almost three weeks ago. People will always ask the question: 'Where were you when you found out Michael Jackson had died?' My answer would be at The Railway Inn in Winchester watching a couple of my friend's bands play a gig. How did I find out? Via Twitter, that's how! The micro-blogging social networking phenomenon that is taking the internet by storm informed me of the sad news that Michael Jackson had died. Lots of my friends were tweeting that he had suffered a heart attack before the confirmed reports came in that he had indeed died. After reading those tweets on twitter I checked my facebook friend's status updates and sure enough almost every status was about MJ. I think that the true power of twitter was shown that night as many people must have heard of MJ's death via twitter. Within minutes of the news spreading MJ was already in the list of trending topics and soon reached the top trending topic on the site. Twitter also crashed for a while because there were so many tweets about MJ being posted!

In the weeks prior to MJ's death I had become addicted to twitter and without it who knows how I would have found out the news? I think the reason why twitter is so popular is because of its accessibility, not only can you tweet via the twitter website but there are hundreds of applications that allow you to tweet so easily. For example, I have TwitterBerry and UberTwitter on my BlackBerry, TweetDeck on my PC and TwitterFox – an add-on for internet browser FireFox. All of these offer simple and easy ways to tweet and to keep up with the latest updates from your friends/celebrities whom you may follow.

Twitter wasn't the only website to collapse under the weight of MJ's death, other sites included TMZ - the site who first confirmed that he was dead, the LA Times website and Perez Hilton's famous celebrity blog. Google also found it hard to cope the surge of traffic and therefore when searching for Michael Jackson all users got was an error message because the site thought it was under attack. This shows how popular MJ really was, imagine the amount of people that are using the internet now, it would be a very large number, but then imagine the amount of people it would take to crash the internet, this must have been such an extraordinary amount of people frantically searching the internet for news about the MJ's death.

The funny thing about it was I was going to buy tickets for me and my mum for one of Micheal Jackson's O2 Arena shows but my mum said 'he'll never make it'. She didn't think he would die but rather just thought he wouldn't be physically well enough to do the shows. Very eerie!

E3

Yes, I know E3 was a week ago but I’ve had a lot of work to do to finish Universty for the year. Now, finally I have a spare half an hour to blog my reaction to the biggest gaming event of the year; the Electronic Entertainment Expo.

Being an avid user of both Facebook and Twitter, the announcement that these two huge social networking websites are coming to Xbox Live was a big one for me. The screenshots of both these applications look like they are extremely well optimised for the Xbox and what's more is, they are both coming free 'this fall', which I understand means ‘autumn’ in American.

Project Natal was clearly the biggest weapon in Xbox's arsenal to take out the competition and it really did, I knew Sony or Nintendo would not be able to touch it. Taking the idea of motion sensor controllers to a whole new level, where you, the gamer and your body are the controllers. The level of interactivity shown in Microsoft's presentation of Project Natal was truly unbelievable. Obviously Nintendo fan boy’s will argue that Project Natal is just a Wii rip off and maybe it is, Nintendo did get the ball rolling for this type of interactive gaming, but Microsoft completely reinvented the wheel this year.

Ok, the idea is cool, but how much will the technology cost? It is clearly aimed at the more ‘family’ market and I am unsure if it will appeal to serious gamers as much, the concept is nice, but wouldn’t they just rather shoot people using a controller on Call of Duty? I can see it now, Call Of Duty: Project Natal, where you use your hand as a gun!? Perhaps I am being too cynical too soon and fair enough Microsoft already has the serious gamers market and needs to appeal to a wider audience and Project Natal is an excellent way to go about it. The demonstration with ‘Milo’ was a bit creepy though, I’m not too sure about that, not only creepy, but it looked extremely childish. Sorry Lionhead.

As for the games that were shown at the show I am very excited about Left 4 Dead 2 and obviously Modern Warfare 2 as well, I hope it’s not just hype, because the gameplay did look amazing! The Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy franchises now being available on Xbox is very big coup for Microsoft and I look forward to playing them!

E3 does get bigger and bigger every year, but this year it was truly unbelievable, with so much competition between the three gaming giants. My non-biased opinion would be that Microsoft did have the best press conference. No-one could have expected what they produced and the technology is just revolutionary. All in all, it was a good show!

Sky TV coming to an Xbox 360 near you!

Yesterday Xbox announced a deal that will enable Xbox 360 owners to watch Sky TV on their Xbox. In a revolutionary move users will be able to watch Sky TV without the need for a satellite dish, set top box or an existing Sky subscription.

In the press release Microsoft said that "The ink is barely dry on the deal", which basically means that they have no idea how it is going to work yet or what they are going to do but they were so excited about the deal they wanted to announce it as quick as possible. It is due for release in the autumn and entitled 'Sky Player', see what they did there?

Being a technology geek I am very excited about this. It is a great idea for people that only have freeview and being a current Sky subscriber myself, I'm hoping for a good deal for existing Sky customers like me. I can see it being pretty expensive, but no other service will be able to offer what the 'Sky Player' can. It was announced that there will be subscription packages along with pay per view, so it is highly likely that things like football matches will be avialable on a pay-per-view basis. Incorporation with elements of Xbox Live will make for a very interesting idea, for example being able to discuss football matches with your friends over Xbox Live.

It is a very interesting move on the part of Microsoft because their competition, Playsyation 3 and Wii, have BBC iPlayer available on their consoles. Its has also not been ruled out that BBC iPlayer will come to the Xbox at some point. This also comes as Microsoft announce that BBC programmers will be available on demand on the Xbox in the US.

Fallout 3 Vs Trade-Ins

At the moment the game industry is in a massive war with trade-in's; where a game is bought, completed, and then traded in.

I don't like reviewing games until i have fully completed them, but Fallout 3 just keeps giving and giving, i don't think i will ever get to review it. With two more downloadable content packages announced for the end of June and end of July. It looks to be like there will be many more hours of gaming within the Fallout universe, making Fallout 3 the longest game i have EVER played, i certainly don't plan on trading it in.

I'm at about 70 hours of gameplay now after completing the first two sets of downloadable content and being half way through the third. However, each downloadable extension pack costs 800 Microsoft points which works out at about £6.80. So for the complete set of downloadable content it will cost £34, this is about the price the game costs in the first place, so it's like buying a new game! Some would argue that we, the consumers, are being manipulated to buy game add on after game add on, but in the game makers’ defence, it's a good way to counter the constant war that game makers’ have with trade-ins.

With the last set of downloadable content due out about nine months after the initial release of the game; Fallout 3 might just have found the secret to end the trade-in war and may just be that game that you don’t trade in!

You Me At Six review published @ RE:SUS Magazine

You Me At Six
12th March 2009
Portsmouth Pyramid Centre
By Paul Carrett

As part of the completely sold out ‘777’ tour You Me At Six brought their catchy pop punk riffs to Portsmouth Pyramids.

Support tonight comes from two American bands: ‘Emarosa’, making their debut in the UK, and ‘The Spill Canvas’ who have already established a large fan base in the UK. However, with ‘The Spill Canvas’ being quite a slow band, they didn’t really warm the crowd up for the headline band.

You Me At Six kick off their set with the recent single ‘Jealous Minds Think Alike’ followed by ‘Gossip’, this is UK pop punk at it’s best. During ‘The Truth Is A Terrible Thing’ the Surrey boys break into an excellent cover of Fall Out Boy’s ‘Sugar, We’re Going Down’.

It’s amazing how far this band have come in the four years they’ve been around and their maturity is shown with the complexity of slower songs like ‘Tigers and Sharks’ and ‘Always Attract’.

You Me At Six finish the night with ‘The Rumour’ and with the entire crowd hands in the air, singing the lyrics ‘Hold your hands in, into the air, Hold your hands as if you care’ as loud as possible, You Me At Six really are at the top of their game.

WWE Legends Of WrestleMania Review

Bit late with the review but i think this game deserves a good review from a wrestling fans point of view and from a casual gamer’s point of view.

As a WWE fan, I buy the annual game from WWE, which generally, year after year has been improving. Then WWE release WWE Legends Of WrestleMania, apparently for the 'older' generation of gamers who will remember WrestleMania’s from the past 25 years. This game boasts a simpler control system along with a good selection of legends and authentic arenas that create an excellent sense of nostalgia.

The first thing any wrestling game fan will notice is the very simplistic control system. It's in an arcade style and makes use of only the four face buttons; these are for strike, grapple, block and action. At some points in the game this is actually more complicated than it sounds. Since there are only four buttons, each one does different things in different environments, and this can get very confusing at times. Obviously this game is trying to target the casual gamer market that may be intimidated by the complex control system of the Smackdown Vs Raw games.

With the tag-line 'relive, rewrite and redfine' that is exactly what you can do in ‘WrestleMania Tour Mode’ with previous WrestleMania matches... kind of. It's very limited. With the relive mode you gain points in matches by completing events that actually happened in the matches. With rewrite you have to change the outcomes of the matches and with redefine you compete in the matches but with different stipulations. This is a lot of fun for matches that you have watched.

The game also has a 'Legend Killer Mode’ where you can use any superstar or created superstar to attempt to beat a selection of legends, one after the other, all in one go. The last tier being the hardest and most time consuming, where you have to defeat all 38 legends on the game in one go. It’s challenging at first but then just feels like a chore.

The presentation of the game is good; the graphics are just as good as the Smackdown Vs Raw games. Also before you play any match in ‘WrestleMaina Tour Mode’ there is a video with rare WrestleMania footage of the match you have reliving, which is a nice touch.

WWE Legends Of Wrestlemania has a small roster, with only 38 legends, however if you have a WWE Smackdown Vs Raw 2009 game save you can import the entire roster from that game to have current superstars fight legends, which can be fun for a while. That's pretty much what this game is, fun for a while. For example I acquired the maximum 1000 gamerpoints in about a week but it can be done in a lot shorter time than this and the re-playability is one of the main things that lets this game down. There is not much reason to play this game again once you’ve completed ‘Wrestlemania Tour Mode’, ‘Legend Killer Mode’ and played all your fantasy matches between current WWE superstars and Legends.

I don’t really think casual gamers will be interested in this game at all, nor will the new generation of WWE fans who might feel pretty insulted by the simple control system and get bored very quickly. However for the ‘older’ generation of WWE fans this game will be fun, being able to relive the matches they watched when they were young with a simple control system.

Economic Concepts

After an interesting lecture on economic concepts i would quite like to think that i am not an empiricist, if i were then i would be very limited to believing that anything i had not seen actually experienced even existed, and this is just stupid.

So an empirical idea is one based on direct experience, an idea that has reliable proof and evidence. The quote from the lecture was ‘I won’t believe it until I see it with my own two eyes' and it think this summarises the theory well.

For lack of a better example last week i was told that my friend had cheated on his girlfriend, who is also a good friend of mine. I refused to tell her because i had not seen him cheat and he said he didn't do it. Who knows? There was no proof; i didn't believe it because i didn't see it with my own two eyes!

On the other hand a-priori is where something is explained by an a-priori principle or assumption. To explain the difference between empiricism and a-priori: if i have two apples now, and i plan to get another three apples, i will have five apples. This is a-priori because i know that two plus three is five. I did not actually need to get the three other apples and place them with the first two to see that I have five, like an empiricist would.
